And then there is plan C. I like the analogy Strider puts forth with his
Plan A and B, but I struggle with the somantics. If Plan A is the life I'm
living and Plan B is that other life I strive for, then by definition I will
always be in desire of that other life. Of course, I'm sure this is not the
point he was trying to make with his analogy, life is never that simple.
Fortunatly we have the entire alphabet we can work through, I am currently
on Plan C - PCTResearch. I am currently engaged with plans to meld my desire
to be on the PCT/wilderness and my current pursuit for a Masters Thesis.
Plan A the Masters Thesis + Plan B the PCT now presents Plan C, a Masters
Thesis on the PCT. Now I'm living in both worlds with the rewards and
hardships of each to fuel my life. Plan C (D, E, F...) is available to all
of you out there feeling stuck in Plan A, and wanting Plan B. It requires
compromise, but this can allow you to adapt a plan based on your realistic
desires, thus eliminating that Plan B that is always just out of reach.

Strider writes >> By the way, my dear friend Jeff Z comes pretty close to
this and I fondly
refer to him (mostly behind his back) as my "Plan B" friend.<<
This makes me wonder what your friend Jeff's Plan B is, or if he even has
one?

Strider, I like your ideas but found it necessary to adapt them to the way I
think.
Also, can you give more info on the PCT Support Team and the ADZPCTKOP
gathering. I will be providing support for a group of PCT hikers throughout
the CA of the PCT and may be of help to others.

And now the plug: My Masters Thesis I ellude to above will look at how the
bodies of long distance backpackers (PCT thru-hikers) change and how these
changes are related to diet and performance. I am still in need of
volunteers wh owill be hiking the PCT (CA or beyond). To find out more about
my research please go to my web site at
http://www.skyrocket.com/pctresearch/ But, please be forwarned that I am
still working at developing this site and it is no where near complete. I'll
need another couple weeks to complete and even then it will continue to
change as new information becomes available.

A few last words: I enjoyed the discussion on the clearcutting, it was good
to hear it from different angles and points of view. Personally, I think the
logging industry should be allowed to take as much lumber as they like with
the one exception - they are banned from the use of internal combustion in
doing so. It seems to be a combination of our growing population and demand
for lumber and our use of modern technology that leads to forests being cut
faster then they can grow (not to mention the act of governement subsidizing
resource extration to permit the sell of virgin material below the cost of
recycables and alternatives). Just imagine if timber extraction were done
all by man and animal power (no chain saws or logging trucks), how this
would ultimatly be reflected in the price of the resource, thus influencing
its use in our society.
As for Bricks ideas - YEAH HEMP!! We have the alternatives or at least the
ideas but they are just not "politically feasible" if you know what I mean.
