Clearcuts In Washington: On The PCT And On Other Trails

The Washington Forest Law Center, in cooperation with The Mountaineers and others, will petition the WA Forest Practices Board to adopt forest practice rules that would better protect recreation and scenic beauty on both private and state-owned forest lands. Currently no such rules exist, although the state Forest Practices Act stipulates that they should.

The PCTA and other trail groups have joined this petition in an effort to find some middle ground. We recognize the value and importance of forest management but also wish to see increased sensitivity to the resources, trails and recreation experience.

The WFLC is seeking thru-hikers, local hikers, equestrians and other trail users (since they are concerned about all trails) who have photos of clearcuts, are willing to write letters and who are willing to give testimony.

PS. The following is a website that contains all of the GIS mapping that the WFLC has done to
show clearcutting around representative sections of the PCT. Please bear in mind that this is only one section of the trail in WA. Go to this site and click all the maps that have "Pacific" in them. The others are maps for trails other than the PCT. The maps show how much logging has been conducted around the PCT over the past 10 years:
