I am no medical expert but have had quite allot of experience with sports
injuries and knee problems. Knees come in a wide spectrum of design,
durability and relative strength. Some are crap and some are steel. Like I
tell my kids, "you get what you get."

My doctor is amazed at my durability and lack of knee, ankle, hip or back
injury after years of basketball, the PCT and many years since of
backpacking (with a heavy pack) considering my height and weight (6' 9", 240
lbs). I have been extremely fortunate. My knees have hurt for two days
after playing basketball on a concrete court. It is clear that there is
damage being done that hopefully my body repairs.

However, far smaller, lighter people with far fewer miles have experience
far greater problems at the far other end of the spectrum.

I just heard on the radio this morning about a report that onions help bone
density, particularly in menopausal women. Might just help those hurting
knees.
