Since I don't hang food I don't know one method from the other as far as 
effectivness. I did her of a new approach, but bear with me.  Toss a rope 
over the selected branch, tie your bag, just above the bag, make a loop, 
place rope through.  Pull the bag and loop as far up as possible, reach high 
and tie a stick to rope.  Lower rope, the food bag stays where the loop and 
branch meet, then dangle left over rope.  The bear doesn't have the ability 
to snare dangled rope.

I heard this technique at Kennedy Meadows and explained it to others, it 
seemed to work for them.
