[pct-l] Mammoth Lakes to Mt. Whitney

I am planning to hike the Mammoth to Whitney segment of the JMT beginning Aug 22, 1999.  Winnett's (?sp) guide book mentions the dangerous fords over Silver Pass Creek and the North Fork of Mono Creek (south of Silver Pass).  Anybody have any information on these crossings?  Any other suggestions or commentary is appreciated - either to the list or personally to me.
