[pct-l] High Sierra Wilderness
In Tuesday's (July 27, 1999) L.A. Times was an article on the upcoming
joint plan by the U.S. Forest Service for the several National Forests that
cover the Sierras.
It says that in 1996 a previous plan "was withdrawn before public release
because it was at odds with a major scientific survey of the Sierra region."
"That congressionally authorized study, which underpins the current
planning effort, identified various environmental threats: population
growth, a decline in nearly one-fifth of the range's land animals,
widespread degradation of stream systems, and substantial loss of the
region's largest and oldest trees."
Does anyone know where I might get a copy of this unnamed study?
Thank you in advance.
We noticed in our last trip to the Ansel Adams Wilderness a lack of "land
animals". I can recall only seeing a couple squirrels, chipmunks, no
marmots, only 4 deer, no bears, no mice . . .
