Re: [pct-l] Ultimate Bear-Box

Right on Monte!

By placing an abnormal version of human into the high sierra we have
created an abnormal version of black bear. The humans are abnormal in that
they have been rendered helpless by National Park laws. The bears have in
turn become abnormal in that they have come to see humans as prey, or at
least they see our food as prey. What gives humans the right to defend
their food from bears? It is not some Judeo-Christian idea of eminent
domain. We have the right to defend ourselves because we have opposable
thumbs, binocular vision, bipedal locomotion, four pound brains, and the
power to use tools. It is because we can! Defending ourselves and our
possessions from animals is not some new idea developed by our industrial
society. What did native Americans call a bear that raided their camp in
the night? Breakfast.
Washington has more black bears than any other state, yet bear problems
are rare. Why? Because bears are hunted here. A limited hunting season
would reduce, if not eliminate the bear problems in the sierra parks, with
little change in the bear population. Remember that the camp bears are not
representative of the species. They are an abnormality created by man.
