Well, I use an internal for tricky (to me) cl2 and skiing, but I just
can't get serious-enough about hiking to spend serious money on it ,
Owen. Can't make myself buy a new pack for trail-hiking when I already
have one, even if it isn't that up-to-date; I'm not in that great shape,
myself <g>. I was hoping that one of the newer sold-separately hipbelts
etc might fit the Alpenlite frame.

You know, I "inherited" the Alpenlite when a girlfriend married the
outdoorsy guy she was luring with a backpacker-facade, and was tossing
away all their gear so she wouldn't have to go hiking ever again!<LOL> I
just love the darn thing, the way I can select my stuff from it like a
kitchen cabinet, the way it sits up by itself next to me like a little
pet doggie, the no-nonsense design, the price....

For years, I've been just duct-taping pieces of Ensolite onto the
straps/hipbelt, but the fancy-schmancy padding (and "female" contours) of
the internal's straps/belt have me pining for a better solution. It seems
everybody but me finds fabulous outdoor gear at garage sales; all I find
is ugly lamps, nutty tee-shirts, and puzzling kitchen gadgets, sigh.
