I carried Counter Assault pepper spray once. I don't consider it necessary. I
have not heard of a bear attacking a human with a pack on yet but I know of
several cases where a human left his pack -- just for an instant--and the bear
was there.

I don't know the exact rules but my impression is that you can't hike east of
Kearsarge Pass without a canister even if you don't camp.
