I don't believe that the aluminum can is more secure than the plastic. If
anything it is less so. [This is from observation. I don't have any direct
evidence]. Aluminim is lighter 2# 3oz vs 2# 12 0z

I pack all food in the canister [if I can], then bring all gear into the tent.
If I have too much food I stop at a bear box.
