Hurricane Helen trekked the PCT from Pines-to-Palms highway (near Anza) to
Idyllwild between Sunday 4/11 and Friday 4/16. Anyone following soon
behind should allow extra time for this stretch. Due to snow depths above
the knees, the trail could not be seen at all between Tahquitz Valley Trail
and Devils Slide Trail - thanks to compass and topo map for getting
through. The snow was melting during the warmer mid-day meaning constant
post-holing, but was crusty and slippery during the morning and evening
making her ice-axe essential for safety. Helen's left hand is still
cramping. Today, Sunday 4/18 she set out again, hoping that this snow
challenge will result in plenty of water in the springs ahead and behind
and lots of wildflowers all through the Mojave.
