Does anyone out there care to share their experiences
with regard to *homemade* equipment/clothing or the
adoption of Ray's other methods?

Jim,
    I have a website that shares instructions for homemade gear (the address is at the bottom of this message).  Some of the gear is super lightweight (e.g. 1.4 oz alcohol stove, multifunctionality of hiking pole/camera monopod combo, barebones hydration pack, 18oz tarp tent).  Perhaps you may find some of the info helpful.
