Re: [pct-l] Ultralight???

There is light and then there is ultralight.

A 25 pound base weight pack will provide the contingencies for bad weather and
some degree of comfort. Fully laden you might get the pack up to 50-60 pounds
including food and water.

A 15 pound base weight means making compromizes that, as Monte says "Will blow
you off the trail like a June bug" come bad weather. Still, you are looking at
40-50 pounds fully laden.

My point is there is only about 10 pounds between a normal light pack where the
person packs as light as possible, buying the best possible lightweight gear but
does not sacrafice foul weather gear or a degree of comfort and an ultralight
pack that sacrafices a real tent, real stove, water filter extra clothes etc. in
order to walk farther each day.

Now I'd be the last one to discount the significance of even one pound much less
ten. However, it seems that ultralight hikers "sprint" from one trailstop or
townstop to another -- possibly because they don'r really like being out there.
