[pct-l] Hat Creek Rim (and other dry stretches of the PCT)

I've been discussing the trail water situation with the PCTA and the USFS
since my hike along the Hat Creek Rim (30 waterless miles in Section N) last
year.

I had the opportunity last August to talk to the local USFS Ranger for the
district. I asked him about water on the Hat Creek Rim. He said that they had
tried to dig a well there once, but were unsuccessful. He said they even
tried placing a "water buffalo" (water tank on wheels) there. His impression
was that " ... nobody hiked the Rim anyway, so why do anything?" He seemed to
think that all the through-hikers walked the road from Old Station to Burney
Falls?

So my questions are for those of you who HAVE hiked Section N (section hike
or through-hike): Did you hike along the Hat Creek Rim, or along the road to
Burney Falls State Park? How did YOU manage to hike 30 miles without a water
resupply? Would you like to see some type of water supply added to break up
that 30-mile dry stretch?

Now, how about those of you who PLAN to hike Section N this year or later?
Are you content with a "30-mile dry stretch?" Are you just as happy to hike
along the highway for 30 miles?

Rather than bog down the PCT-L with a lot of "water-war Pros and Cons," how
about just sending me a private email with your thoughts. I'll compile the
comments and forward them to the PCTA for their consideration. I'll probably
also post a condensed version of the survey results on the List.

Thanks for your participation,
Charlie Jones
