Actually, I don't think it was the spring that was producing most of the
noise (though I could be wrong). The poles are very thin and light, so when
you really slam them down on the ground, they bow out just a hair. That bow
instantly snaps back and sets up a lateral vibration that makes a
clattering/buzzing sound. That, and the unavoidable "tap, tap, tap" as you
plant the points on rocks and things. It wasn't *really* loud, but it was
noticable. It's the sort of thing you could learn to tune out pretty
quickly, kind of like a rattle from your backpack. Walking normally on
level or uphill sections, the poles were very quiet.
