I can't help you with the bus.   

But I have a logistial problem with that section too, hiking south to north. 

I was thinking of getting rid of my trailshoes that I'll be using in the
desert sections  at Onyx and continuing to KM in tevas before picking up my
boots for the Sierras and points beyond (switching out footwear further north,
as neccesary)

Just how is this section of trail between Onyx and Kennedy Meadows?  Is it
good thread path for a sandel.  I have fairly resilient ankles.  Will there be
snow?  Should I just get my boots in Onyx?
