The El Primo hiking season: no snow or mud, no "raging'"streams, no
mosquitoes. There are small snowfields most years on the north faces of
the highest passes (like Forrester), but nothing to drag an axe to.
August is thunderstorm-season, which, aside from requiring the usual
precautions, means neat late-afternoon excitement sometimes.
By the "first snows", I'll guess you mean "the beginning of the
winter snows", which last year was mid-October, but nothing to get
excited about. After that time, you should be prepared for Winter
Conditions, as the rangers say - even tho you may not actually encounter
them until November. In the high Sierra, there can be snowstorms (but not
the weeklong winter kind) even in August. Very pretty; you just dive for
cover from the hail etc, & emerge a bit later (usually dusk) to a "winter
wonderland" all traces of which are melted the next day. I can recall
longer mid-August snowfalls - from storms originating in the tropics -
but I believe they're uncommon.... bj
