Try Washington's Alpine lakes wilderness section in early September, 
from Snoqualmie Pass to Stevens Pass. Beautiful stretch, and about the 
length you are looking for. No real bear problems either (there seem to 
be more bear north of Stevens Pass, but still not an issue).
