25-27 pounds exclusive of food and water is a typical weight for a well
thought out comfortable backpack. Many thruhikers take a lot less, walk
further, and suffer more. How much you carry is a matter of style. When you
carry a bear canister it will weigh 20 pounds filled [assuming you pack it
right]. Add the first day's food and your total weight is 47-50 pounds. Can
you handle that? If you can you can make it thru the sierra without a lot
of resupply difficulty.

re:Bear canister
I would certainly carry a bear canister from Kennedy Meadows to Lake Tahoe.
It is not really necessary in the southern section. I don't know about
Washington and Oregon
