[pct-l] Washington Ice Axes

For Southbound PCT hikers, this year is shaping up to be a normal to above
nomal snowfall year in Wash. July 1st would be a good start date ( maybe a
week before) Hang on to those ice axes till you hit the Columbia River! You
will need them for the goat rocks ( high point of Wash.) Be prepared for mass
bug attacks between Chinook Pass and White Pass as this can be just a series
of swamps in early to mid July. I would get a taller ice axe to use as a
walking stick with a small add on snowbasket. Before treking poles, people
have been known to use their axe this way all 2600 miles. ( plus you don,t
have to carry it ) Mail the axe home at stevenson and ship to Sierra,s for
later. PS. Collin Fletcher is great reading and has good advice about gear
and backpacking in general. He has seen alot of hype come and go and gives a
good prespective on what really works in the real world. ( a must for novice
or pro,s)
