Correction (I'll correct myself before anyone else can),

The name of the book (I find in Amazon.com that there are other
translations under different names also) is:

Adventures in the Unknown Interior of America, by Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca.

He and about eighty men walked into Florida and headed west.  Eight years
later he and seven other men walked into Mexico City.  It is available from
Amazon.com in paperback.  Read the reviews, I agree it is a great account,
comparable to Undaunted Courage, the recent account of Lewis and Clark's
Expedition.
