Re: [pct-l] What are 99 thru hikers doing about bear / food issues?

1. I am NOT a thru hiker.
2. I DO understand the Sierra

Understanding the above.

To avoid using a bear canister [as a thruhiker]
1-Use bear boxs as far north as they are provided [Woods Creek
Crossing @ the bridge]
2-From Woods Creek to the GoldenStaircase practise stealth camping
staying high to camp and avoid the Kings River Valley and popular
lakes.
3-Walk thru LeConte Canyon in one day and camp high near Muir Pass.
4-Drop thru Evolution and the San Joacquin Canyon climbing to camp
above Sally Keys Lake below Seldon Pass (Heart Lake?)
5-From above Sally Keys Lake make it out to civilization in one day
typically to Butch's place.
6-Leaving VVR {Butch's place], make it to Red's meadow in one day. {24
miles} If you cant do this carry only 1 days food and eat it the first
day. You might be safe at Virginia Lakes In no case should you camp
within many miles of Mammoth
7-Ditto leaving Reds Meadow. Either make it to Upper Lyell Bas Camp in
1 day or Camp High on Island Pass, then make it over Donahue Pass to
Upper Lyell Creek Trail Camp -about 11000. Do NOT drop down into Lyell
Canyon unless you eat all your food by bedtime
8-Leaving Tolumne hike at least 15 miles. Proper counterbalancing
should protect your food theirafter
STANDARD DISCLAIMERS APPLY. The above does not mean I endorse non bear
canister/ bear box backpacking fro non-thruhikers [people who dont have the
ability to cover 20+ miles a day and camp anywhere]

Tom
PS: Come back sometime and see the sierra
