[pct-l] RE: Bears

	>Has anyone actually seen, heard of, or personally had a bear enter
a tent and
	have their food taken?

Hi everyone. I've been lurking for a couple or three months and
just had to jump in here. Yes, I personally have had a up close and
personal bear encounter while sleeping with my food in my tent. I was
camped a couple of years ago near the base of Mt. Lyell outside of Yosemite
Park heading into Tuolumne Meadows. As I was really close to treeline,
there was not a convenient tree to hang the bag, so I put my food at the
foot of my tent. In the dead of night, I was awaken by the sound of my the
foot of my tent being ripped apart. I flew out of that tent and started
banging my cooking stuff together and managed to convince the bear to leave
my alone and go away. The bear tried to return a couple of more times that
night, but I was too keyed up to sleep and was able to see him and make
enought noise. By dawn, I was packed and making better mileage that I had
ever done before.

The next night, I camped across the river from a really loud group
who had already used the cable on their side of the river. Since I was a
woman alone, I was not comfortable being near them on their side of the
river, but because of my bear experience the night before, wanted to be near
people. That night a bear got their food that was hung from the cable and I
was left alone. Since I was resuppling in Tuolomne, I gave what food I had.
I told the a ranger my stories and she said that there was a certain bear
that roamed that part of the trail that was extremely cleaver and tenacious.
Don't know if that bear is still there.

	Denise
