[pct-l] PCT Oregon

For those of you planning a 99 Mex-Can thru hike these are some changes at various supply points in Oregon

1. Ashland P.O....Due to a lack of space the Ashland P O will only hold your packages for 30 days. After 30 days they will return to sender.

2.Cascade Summit is not a Post Office. Send your packages UPS to Shelter Cove Resort.

3. Elk Lake. A possible change in ownership is in the process. The current owners are not overly friendly towards hikers. The potential new owners are VERY hiker friendly. If the sale goes through I will submit another post.

4. Big Lake Youth Camp. 7th Day Adventist youth camp. Difficult to get packages on Saturdays

5. Olallie Lake Gaurd Station has been taken out of service by the USFS. It is currently being rented out as a cabin by Ollalie Lake Resort. Send your packages to the Resort.

The first of November 98 both Big Lake and Shelter Cove both still had over 20 resupply packages that were never claimed. These unclaimed packages do create a burden to these Resorts/Camps. Storage room is a premium. It is good for the hiker community to be responsible for their unclaimed packages. Most of the places I have encountered in Oregon don't mind being used for resupply, however common courtesy for their services is a must.

The Forest Service has a 5 part map of the PCT thru OR and WA. 3 for OR and 2 for WA. These are great maps with mileage, topography and history of the area(s). $3.00 each and worth it. REI stocks all five.
