Re: [pct-l] About them Bear Cans

Snoop-
Bear Cans are a sore subject on this list. There is a strong disagreement.
Some feel that anyone hiking the Kennedy Meadows to Lake Tahoe section
should carry a bear can. Others feel that "stealth camping" [camping where
others ain't] works.

There is general agreement, however, that "counterbalancing" [hanging your
food] is a iffy proposition. Bears get many peoples hung food--this is not
in dispute. If the food was hung correctly and defended rigerously would
the bear have gotten it? That is the question.

This list has lots of thruhikers. Thruhikers tend to go through the
California Sierra in early season when the bears aren't so active. Also,
thruhikers tend to camp where others ain't. Plus, the speed at which they
walk allows them to simply skip the most dangerous sections.

My personal opinion is that all general backpackers hiking during the
season should rely on bear cans and/or bear boxs.
