Re: [pct-l]snowmap

Hi Mary

I don't think you will find much of the PCT clear of snow at this time of
year. At least not in the High Sierra near Lake Tahoe. Don't be afraid to
snowshoe it's easy and fun. You can rent snowshoes for a very small amount
of money and just wear them with your ordinary boots if you're not going to
be out too long.

Stop by one of the ranger stations near Lake Tahoe and they will give you
maps to all the trails in the Tahoe area, plus some good advice. There is a
ranger station near King's Beach on the North side and one near Camp
Richardson on the West side.

A hike I liked is the Steven's Trail out of Colfax (below snowline) which is
on Interstate 80 about one hour east of Sacramento. It is a 41/2 mile hike
down into the American River Canyon (4 1/2 mile back UP!). This trail has
an interesting history - stop by the Colfax Chamber of Commerce
(530-346-8888) for details and directions . Plan on the actual hiking time
to be two hours and twenty minutes if you walk very fast. Closer to three
hours might be a better estimate if you like to enjoy the trail.

Happy Hiking
