[pct-l] introductions

I guess I'll jump on the introduction bandwagon.

I grew up hiking in the White Mountains of Maine and New Hampshire.
These days I'm up for pretty much any sort of outdoor activity, from
kayaking to rock climbing, and of course backpacking. I'm at college in
Boston, majoring in computer science, although right now I'm out in
Portland, OR taking a year off to sort some things out.
I'd been toying with the idea of hiking the AT for a couple years,
when someone suggested that I look into the PCT, as it might be a more
interesting trip. So I'm now planning a northbound thru-hike for '99. I'm
hoping to start in mid-April so that I can finish in time to get back to
school, but I don't know if this is reasonable. I've heard that next year is
supposed to be mild in terms of snow conditions, which I'd think would make
an early start more feasible. Any input on this is welcome. I've been on the
list for a couple months now, but have kept pretty quiet. I'll probably
start posting lots of questions as I get further into my planning. When
people put their personal differences aside, I've found the list to be very
useful and informative.

-Yip (I go by my last name)

P.S. Is anyone in the Oregon/Washington area planning a '99 thru-hike?
