In '97, a fairly typical snow year, we left Kennedy Meadows on June 17 and
reached Donner Summit (I-80) on July 16. An ice axe was very helpful crossing
Forrester and Glen. Also useful but not essential in some other passes. No
other snow gear (crampons, etc.) was carried or required. Unless conditions
are significantly worse next spring, I don't think you'll have any problem on
the JMT with snow.
However, be properly concerned about high water crossings and smart bears.
