When Will Uher and I did the JMT in 1987 our aim was 6-7 days. We actually
took 8.5 days (south to north). We were very comfortable with this because
we had run many ultramarathons and were used to high mileage days and
events.

To me, the challenge was to do the trail in a fast time. We did not fish and
do sidetrips. I am not one to hike for six hours and then sit around camp
all afternoon. I have to be doing something. We enjoyed the JMT just as much
as someone taking twice as long. Our perspective on how to do it is simply
different.

Even now, I want to do the JMT again and throw in the Tahoe-Yosemite
Trail--but in a fastpacking fashion, 12 to 14 days. That is simply how I
would like to do the trails. With limited time, I can see a lot of country.
