Scott Conover (PCT 94) recommends taking a look at the Campmor 20 degree
down bag. It's priced at $125, which makes it one of the lowest cost down
bags around. They do not offer a microfiber shell, but the other
characteristics of the bag make it comparable to many higher priced bags.
Scott now owns a Campmor down bag and is happy with it. He met two PCT
class of 93 hikers who used it with excellent results.
As an aside, I don't understand why long distance hikers want to take their
pets with them. One of the joys of hiking is to separate oneself from all
the day to day responsibilities, and dogs seem to be very high maintenance,
especially on the trail. Further, on my PCT hike in '96 I was attacked
several times by dogs, whose owners could not control their beasts.
Luckily, I had my ice ax to fend off the worst of these attackers. I did
meet some nice dogs, too. But dog owners who take vicious, uncontrollable
dogs into the backcountry are irresponsible.
