Actually, a phone cellular system without dead spots is already available.

Morolola's Iridium
(http://www.mot.com/GSS/SSTG/SSSD/mwins/iridservices.html) project is one
such system.  I've never seen these phones though, so I don't know how heavy
they are, or how well they work under tree cover etc...  If you choose to go
that route, you would definately have some research to do...

At any rate, it may be an option for those of you who really need to make
phone calls :-)
