I am suprised that no one is mentioning peanut butter or almond butter.
It's pretty trivial to find and even comes in plastic jars and is easily
"slammed" along the trail. I read somewhere that the "average"
backpacker
consumes about 6000 calories a day. My guess is that a "thruhiker",
walking
dawn to dusk, will exceed that.

If only we could just kill those pesky bears and render them down
for their fat. Solve two problems at once.

Great idea! Only, you know, the bears aren't the REAL problem. The
real problem is the people who feed the bears.
I was cruising the web for ideas about this issue and, much to my
surprise, discovered that a similar problem had been extensively
discussed in England a few years back. Some of that discussion is
available online, and seems germane to the current topic, so I'll just
include a reference:

Peanut butter not only is high in calories but also protein and some
complex fiber and vitamins. I ate PB&J on graham crackers for lunch
thru
out my thru hike and never tired of it. Now I may be one of those weird
people who don't tire of some things, like Ray J. and his corn meal, but
I
offer this as a tidbit for consideration.
I originally planned to re-supply myself with PB&J from my mail boxes
but
soon found that it was so universally available that I didn't need to
bother, just clean out the containers and refill (back then PB&J only
came
in glass containers).
FWIW,
Greg "Strider" Hummel
