re: Sierra Snowpack
I have developed a reasonable model of this year's snow pack. Everything is
almost exactly a month late. This works except on the forrested western
slope of the southern Sierra that usually gets very little snow
accumulation.
In King Canyon and Sequoia National Parks trails are full of snow, even at
low altitudes. Even assuming that everything is a month late, the snow
accumulation is unusual.
However, along the PCT route conditions are a typical late June during a
heavy snow year. Snow is melting at the rate of 1" of water-2-3" of snow
everywhere where the conditions are exposed. Snow persists where sheltered
from the sun's rays. This is normal late June and early July.
As far as I can tell the real hiking season will start in August.
