Nick,
Bears in Yosemite are a regular Yogi and Booboo act. You should be safe as
long as you counter-balance properly and use the bear poles, boxes and
cables in the various High traffic/high bear areas within Yosemite.
Specific trouble spots on the JMT are Little Yosemite Valley (LYV) which has
bear boxes available; Sunrise creek which has NO forest service devices
(helped resupply one JMT hiker who lost his food at Sunrise Creek); Sunrise
High Sierra Camp (bear pole), Toulumne Meadows (bear boxes) and Lower Lyell
Canyon (bear cable) though I have talked to people who lost food on that
cable. There were also reports of bears Jumping from trees onto the hanging
bear bags.

Not from the Yosemite store. You have to return them plus the fee is $3.00
per DAY (way too expensive). If you decide on bear cans, buy them.

They run about $60-65 each. If you rent two for 20 days, your looking at
about the same cost as buying (plus the hassle of returning them). A better
method might be to buy one and use it to store your really fragrant items.
Bear bag your sealed stuff, freeze dry, etc. The idea being to put the
smelly stuff in the can (including the garbage).
Good luck on your trip,
