Nick-- I am also planning to hike the JMT this Aug.-Sept., and have some
opinions on food storage to avoid bears, skunks, etc.. There is a list of
bear boxes (stationary, as opposed to portable bear "canisters") on the JMT
site (see link from PCTA). Having hiked in popular areas such as Yosemite
and Mineral King for ten plus years, I have never had a bear get my food,
even though I saw them right in camp earlier. My advice is to A)learn how
to counterbalance food bags *properly*, (most people I have seen get their
food munched did not know all the particulars of counterbalancing) B) don't
leave trash bags / food detritus / wash water near camp, C)Buy a bear
canister if you're really worried (it makes a pretty good camp stool, if
nothing else) and hang it as well. Oh yeah, and take those candy wrappers
out of your pockets!
