I am planning a trip on the Muir trail beginning July 1. The original
plan was to hike South to North and starting at Cottonwood pass (and
then approaching and climbing Whitney from the West), but when I called
the Whitney Ranger station in Lone Pine, I was advised that there would
probably still be snow at the peak and other passes.

I have only hiked Mt Whitney once, but since there have been no other
reports, I hiked in mid-August (for minimum ice on the trail, never mind
the snow). I only saw two very small patches of ice on the trail and both
were easily avoided. The weather was mild (55 early AM, 75 at noon at
summit). Fortunately, Whitney summit is pretty exposed and so the
sublimation of the snow off top surfaces should be complete by the end of
July. Also the trail approaches from the south, another advantage. The
top is talus (big boulders, 2-6 feet in diameter) so there will probably be
plenty of snow left down in between the boulders. But if you boulder hop
the last quarter mile, you should be OK. Good luck. And go as late as
you can.
