The guide-book says 1:50,000 with a few exceptions. That's just a bit more
than 1.25 inches to the mile. As another poster mentioned, most maps have
section lines which mark out a grid of (mostly) square miles.
While we're on the subject, watch out for the changes in elevation scale.
The books switch back and forth between 200' major contours and 400' majors.
Generally they use the 400' contours in the more mountainous regions, like
Mt. San Jacinto and the Sierra.
