RE: [pct-l] Bugs

Hi Svein,

With all the snow worries, we haven't touched the "bug" question in a
while. It's probably no coincidence. The more snow you hike through,
the fewer bugs you'll have to deal with!

In '97 my father and I left Kennedy Meadows on June 17th. The
mosquitoes were bad from there to Echo Lake. How bad depended on
elevation. On the snow covered passes they were almost absent, while
down in the snow-melt soggy lower elevations they were indescribably
ravenous. Those who were only a week or two ahead of us didn't have it
bad for so long, presumably due to more snow.

Because of the heavier snow this year, the mosquitoes will probably be
late. Once you get to the volcanic areas north of Yosemite, snow melt
quickly disappears underground, leaving little habitat for mosquitoes.
Count your blessings as you slog through the snow in the Sierra this
year. ;-)
