Re: [pct-l] Stories from the edge

Blisterfree -- Your story dredges up memories! Did you notice shells in the
area? A few years ago I had the chance to explore some of the desert along
the northeast side of the Salton Sea. The land was strewn with shells which
were no doubt left from the era when the whole region was covered by an inland
sea.

Further east, north of Gila Bend, AZ, I've seen the desert lands covered by
black pebbles. When they are turned over, you find that the black is some
kind of coating which was deposited only on the exposed, upper surface.
Someone referred to it as "desert varnish", but I have no idea how it got
there. Volcanic, maybe? Can anyone tell me what it is? -- Roy
