[pct-l] Grizzlies in the North Cascades

Dear Blister,
The person who introduced me to the PCT, Mike Ross, a thru hiker in 1975
described the following story to me:
"I was hiking alone in the Nth Cascades just south of the Canadian border,
maybe 40-50 miles away. There was a light covering of snow on the ground
that left well defined footprints. I came to an unmarked fork in the trail
and decided upon the left fork. I had walked about a mile when I decided
that I should have taken the other fork and so turned around. After a
quarter mile, in from the forest came a set of clear grizzly prints that
had followed my prints from near the fork! Needless to say I put on my
fastest pace and got the hell out of there!"
He added some days later: "Isn't it nice to know that there actually is
something left out there that can eat you? It makes sleeping in the
wilderness just a little closer to the feeling that the pioneers must have
felt long ago."

P.S. I didn't see or hear about any encounters with grizzlies in '77, nor
since.
