I don't know why you'd want to.  What would you use it for?  A compass weighs
1 oz and doesn't require batteries.  You will have the guide book topo maps
anyways.  Sounds like a lot of weight and hassle to me.  GPS's are great, but
not on a thru-hike, IMO.
