I agree with Birgitte. Don't carry a gun on the PCT. Whatever you will be
carrying in your pack is "just stuff." It can be replaced.
I recall reading that Jason and Katrina (I think) had their packs stolen while
they were getting water and they were many, many miles north of the border.
Don't risk your life for "stuff." It's not really that bad out there. A better
defense on the first 50 miles is "hike with a group."
