I too had the Avocet altimeter watch on my PCT hike in '96. It worked
great. I did have to recalibrate it once every so often. I think how
accurate they are depends upon each individual watch. I remember that Brick
told me the first Avocet he bought was consistently accurate, with the
exception of being exactly 10% off each reading!
When I compiled the trail data for the PCT planning program (or when you
plan a hike using the program), you will get 318563 ft of elevation gain
from Mexico to Canada (Mt. Whitney included).
