[pct-l] Mather, Forester Pass

I was reading that most of the passes on the PCT/JMT trail from 
Whitney to Yosemite are still pretty much snow covered. Is this 
typical for this time of year ? Will I need an ice ax ? I plan on 
hitting the trail from Toulumne on 7/31 and  am wondering if the 
conditions in the passes will show any improvement by the time I reach 
them. I really don't want to pack an ax with me if I don't have to.

Anybody have any first or second hand knowledge of the situation with 
the snow. i would appreciate reading as much info as I can get before 
7/29.
