Re: [pct-l] Hiking on a shoestring

By the way, I'm, "a friend at REI,..."

I'm selling gear as I type, just sold some nice crampons to a fella heading
up to Alaska for the next few months and my roommate sold his buddie a 0
degree down bag. I also just set up a friend who's taking off to travel the
world with pack, fleece and goretex. When you work in the business for awhile
you tend to have too much and hence I'm getting rid of it all for cash for
the trail this summer. That last bit will but all the film I need for the
whole PCT! yahoo!
packs (internals and externals), bags, a few tents, some snowboarding stuff,
road race wheels, etc.

I can't remember what Toggosi has but if you need it, let us know. We may
know others who are willing to part with their excess toys, too.

Making gear is definitely a good option, and it's fun too! Seattle Fabrics is
another excellent resource with a wonderfully talented staff. They just moved
so I don't have their number, but if you call, Alan will set you up pretty
well if you're buying bulk or setting off on a cool trip, etc. They have
patterns galore, too.

Here in seattle the Mountaineers has a gear swap twice a year, one soon, one
in the fall. local clubs like sierra club may also hold such an event. if
they don't, get them to, it's a wonderful way to meet more people, hang out,
and scam for deals, and sell your old stuff, especially at the end of the
day.
Suburban garage sales work too.

BTW, just my and my friends' gear for sale. I'm not going to sacrifice my so
called job with getting deals straight from the company for others. That
route isn't worth it.
