just checked the snow conditions for calif. drainages, and here are some
depth reports (*depth* is snow depth, in inches, and *%* is percent of
april 1 water content)for areas along the PCT that i am familiar with:
Location Depth %
======== ===== ===
squaw valley 124 111
rubicon peak 136 118
virginia lakes 69.9 158
blue lakes 103.2 122
sonora pass 82.8 143
tuolumne meadows 85 177
lake edison 62 142
piute pass 113.4 142
bishop pass 108 147
crabtree meadow 79.1 151
big whitney meadow 62.7 133
sorry, i'm not too familiar with pct place names south of bishop.
it was an extremely dry february, and march so far has been dry and quite
warm. i was backcountry skiing around mt reba on saturday, temps were in
the 50s, beautiful corn snow. it is melting fast. barring a couple heavy
late storms, the snow in the high sierra for you thruhikers shouldn't be
any worse than "normal", whatever that is.
i'll check again around the beginning of april.
