If you want to get involved in LA but not PCT specific - go to 
  outdoorsclub.org
  sgwa.org 
  and two yahoo groups 
  socalhikers    
  and so_california_backpackers

  All of these groups are helpful with the last yahoo group being mostly PCT folk.
