Position Summary

The wilderness volunteer ranger will assist the wilderness team on the
Sierra National Forest's spectacular High Sierra Ranger District. The
ranger can expect to take on a wide variety of wilderness-related tasks,
from overnight backcountry trip performing campsite inventories to
assisting at our wilderness visitor's center to assisting with trail
maintenance. The ranger will primarily work with one or more full-time
members of our wilderness staff, and may work with volunteer groups from
time-to-time. Last year, virtually all of the days volunteered consisted
of joining scheduled backcountry tours, but this may vary by need.

Effective Dates

Between 30 May 2006 and 30 September 2006. Each part-time wilderness
volunteer ranger will be required to work for at least 8 full days between
the effective dates.

It may be possible to work more than 8 days if desired. The dates worked
will be determined in advance on an individual basis with each wilderness
volunteer ranger in coordination with the Forest Service and the High
Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew. While we refer to this as a "weekend"
program, participation is definitely not limited to weekends.

Every attempt is made to accommodate the volunteers' schedule, and
facilitate carpools.

The Full time Volunteer Rangers will be fully integrated into the
Wilderness Ranger Staff as a peer.

Job Location

The High Sierra Ranger District of Sierra National Forest is located
primarily in Fresno County, California. The district encompasses
approximately 940,000 acres, including just under 500,000 acres of
designated wilderness. The wilderness areas which fall completely or
partially on the district include the John Muir Wilderness, Ansel Adams
Wilderness, Dinkey Lakes Wilderness, Kaiser Wilderness and Monarch
Wilderness. Elevations of these wilderness areas range from approximately
3300 feet on the San Joaquin River to 13986 feet at Mount Humphreys, with
the vast majority of designated wilderness land lying above 7000 feet.
This spectacular landscape is a mix of granite peaks and valleys, alpine
lakes, alpine meadows and mixed conifer forest.
