The notch in dog tags was so that the tag could be placed in a machine similar to a credit card machine so the info could be printed and the notch held the tag in place. When I first joined the Marines I heard the same story about the dog tag notch being there to hold it in place in a dead GI's mouth but soon learned the real reason for the notch.
