This was posted on the PCT2006 Yahoo Group today:
Schedules and fares are changing to/from these two locations as of
January 30, 2006. See the announcement at
http://www.sdcommute.com/documents/T1RuralChanges.0106.pdf
The 894 bus, which most hikers take between El Cajon and Campo, is
cutting back to three runs a day Mon-Fri. Weekend service is being
discontinued. Departures from El Cajon will be at 9:00AM, 4:00OPM, and
5:10PM. Most hikers who fly into San Diego in the AM will probably take
the 4:00PM run which will put them at the Trading Post in Campo about
5:50PM, too late to do much more than scoot down to the border and back
before dark. One-way fares are increasing from $3 to $8-10. (One of
these runs will also go to Morena - don't know which one).
The 888 bus to Morena/Campo will run a single round trip on Mondays and
Fridays only leaving El Cajon at 4:10PM and arriving in Campo at 5:57PM. I
believe this bus drops you off at Cameron Corners instead of the
Trading Post leaving you a 1-2 mile walk to Campo proper. Take the 894
bus instead unless you want a burger and fries from the stand in
Cameron Corners.
Scissors Crossing to Julian (Route 891) is moving from Saturdays to
Thursdays with only one round trip. It looks like you will still be
able to do the round trip in one day, but it will be an all day affair.
If you are planning to take any of these buses, check SDCommute for
updated schedules just before you leave for the border.
